Ayurvedic Treatment of Hyperacidity
Hyperacidity ( AmlaPitta) refers to a set of symptoms caused by an imbalance between the acid secreting mechanism of the stomach and proximal intestine and the protective mechanisms that ensure their safety. The stomach normally secretes acid that is essential in the digestive process. When there is excess production of acid in the stomach, it results in the condition known as acidity.

Amlapittam Chaiti Amlagunodriktam Pittam | – (Chakrapani)
Which means the qualities of Pitta i.e. sourness is increased leading to Amlapitta
Amlapitta is made up of the two terms amla and pitta. Amla describes a certain taste that is similar to the sour taste that produces excessive salivation. The body chemical known as pitta is primarily in charge of sustaining the processes of digestion, transformation, and transmutation.
Causes of Hyperacidity

- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): This condition occurs when the muscle that separates the esophagus and stomach doesn’t function properly, allowing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus.
- Peptic ulcers: Ulcers that form in the stomach or small intestine can lead to increased acid production.
- Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection: H. pylori is a type of bacteria that can infect the stomach and cause inflammation and increased acid production.
- Medications: Certain medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), aspirin, and certain blood pressure medications can irritate the stomach lining and lead to hyperacidity.
- Alcohol and tobacco use: Drinking alcohol and smoking can irritate the stomach lining and increase acid production.
- Eating a diet high in acidic foods: Consuming a diet that is high in acidic foods such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, and spicy foods can also lead to hyperacidity.
